Non-Gae was a virtuous woman of the Joseon Dynasty.
In 1593, when her husband—a volunteer militia leader and general—was killed in action during the Second Battle of Jinju Fortress and the fortress fell, Nongae infiltrated a banquet held by the Japanese forces disguised as a courtesan.
She lured the Japanese commander, ‘Kida Magobe’ to a cliff overlooking the Nam River in Jinju, embraced him, and threw herself into the river, sacrificing her life with him.
To ensure her grip on the Japanese commander would not slip as she embraced him with her own strength, she had worn jade rings on all her fingers.
At the time, she was only 19 years old.
