Gotgam Tiger

In Korea, there is a tale that the tiger is afraid of Gotgam (dried persimmons).
This is our version of the story “The Tiger and the Gotgam”.
A hungry tiger descends on a village one night and overhears a mother soothing her crying child.
The mother says, “The tiger is here. Don’t cry,” but the child continues to cry, and the tiger thinks that the child is not afraid of the tiger.
Again, the mother says, “Look at the Gotgam (dried persimmon). Stop crying.”
The child stopped crying, and the tiger thought that the Gotgam was more frightening than him.
At this time, a cattle thief came in, mistook the tiger for a cow, and jumped on his back.
The tiger realized that this was indeed Gotgam and ran away with all his might.
When dawn broke, the thief realized that it was a tiger and jumped down and ran away.
The tiger jumped up and down and ran away thinking that he was now alive.
Since then, rumors of tigers running away from Gotgam have spread throughout the mountains.
After being teased by the mountain animals for being a coward, the tiger vowed to become stronger than the Gotgam.
With great discipline, the tiger went down to the village and found the Gotgam hanging from a tree.
With great gusto, the tiger attacked the Gotgam and finished it off with a single bite.
Having defeated it so easily, the tiger was drunk with victory and the sweetness of the Gotgam and exclaimed, “Yes, I‘m the strongest, I’m not afraid of Gotgam!”.
The children in the village, watching the scene, laughed out loud and began to tease the tiger.
“That‘s a Hongshi (Soft Persimmons)~ not a Gotgam~ the tiger is a real stupid~”
